Stress is an unavoidable part of modern life. From looming work deadlines to financial uncertainty, daily responsibilities can pile up and weigh heavily on our mental and physical well-being. In recognition of Stress Awareness Month, let’s take a closer look at the realities of stress, the most common stressors Americans face, and effective strategies for managing it.

The State of Stress in the U.S.
According to the American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2023 “Stress in America” survey, a staggering 75% of adults reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month. Among the most common stressors were:
- Inflation and financial stress: 83% of Americans cited inflation as a significant source of stress.
- Work-related stress: 64% said work is a top stressor, with burnout becoming increasingly common.
- Health concerns: 61% worried about the health of themselves or loved ones, especially post-pandemic.
- The future of the nation: Over 70% reported feeling anxious about the country’s direction, politics, and societal issues.
Stress doesn’t just affect our mood—it can take a toll on physical health as well. Chronic stress has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression.
Recognizing the Signs of Stress
Everyone experiences stress differently, but common symptoms include:
- Headaches, muscle tension, or fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite
- Irritability, anxiety, or feelings of overwhelm
- Difficulty concentrating or memory issues
Recognizing these early warning signs is the first step toward taking back control.
6 Effective Stress Management Techniques
The good news? While we can’t eliminate stress entirely, we can manage it in healthy, productive ways. Here are six proven techniques:
1. Practice Deep Breathing and Mindfulness
Even a few minutes a day of mindful breathing can lower cortisol levels (the body’s stress hormone). Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided meditations and breathing exercises.
2. Get Moving
Exercise is a powerful stress reliever. Physical activity—whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or strength training—releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress.
3. Connect with Others
We are all in this together! Talking things out with a trusted friend, therapist, or support group can help you process emotions and gain perspective.
4. Prioritize Sleep
I emphasize this with my clients so often! When we are stressed, basic self-care strategies are usually the first to go out the window. But if we can notice when we’ve fallen up and get back to creating a healthy routine, we are better equipped to manage stress. Sleep is essential for emotional resilience. Aim for 7–9 hours per night and establish a consistent bedtime routine to improve quality of rest.
5. Set Boundaries
Learn to say no and protect your time, space, and emotional energy. Overcommitting is a major source of stress—especially in the workplace.
6. Limit News and Social Media
Constant exposure to negative news cycles and social media comparison can heighten stress and anxiety. Schedule screen-free time daily to disconnect and recharge. Check out the Forest app to create a healthier relationship with screen time!
